| Only eight riders ventured out to battle the winds today, which were gusting above 20mph at the start. The forecast had the winds increasing through the day – the forecast was correct. It was tough going at times, even through the cross winds. A slight change in the route to avoid construction, found more construction, but ultimately we hit a different rest stop. Return trip was somewhat better as the winds picked up to 19-30, but some of that was tailwind up Indy. Thanks go to those who took turns up front, as most of us took a stint on point. Chris the Machine and Bionic Bob seemed reluctant to give up the front row at times – awesome job guys! With sustained winds near 20mph and gusts of 30mph, it was just way too windy today to try for more miles – even if it is my first anniversary. I started bike riding on 5/19/2012 when a 10 mile trip took 90 minutes; what an incredible 12 months it has been. | ||||||||

| First group ride in over a month and boy, was it fun! DB2 group met for the Wild Ride and started with 8ish riders. Good pace (20.3 by my garmin)to the 35 mile rest stop. Left the stop with many riders who must have known our yellow jerseyed leaders rocked. Our group fell apart a bit after that, but we had a lot of hangers on. Thanks to Marty, Brad, Darrin, Larry, Scott, Gene, Jerry, Heinz and others who looked out for me and shielded me from the wind. Great day! | ||||||||

2013-05-18 | WildRide!+Commute+Bonus = 1st 2013 Century | 100.10 | 16.00 | 0
| Rode from the house (11 miles) down to the WildRide! start and met up with Marty, Mary, Darrin, Larry, Heinz, and several others. Fast start, and picked up riders along the way. I knew we were going a bit fast, but it was fun, and started to feel it about mile 30. Limped into the rest stop behind the group (20 avg at 34 miles), refreshed, and was ready to head out when I kept hearing a rattle on my bike. A few seconds later my Cateye popped off and into the next lane. I peeled off and returned to pick it up before an oncoming car crushed it, but by that time the group was down the road and we were going into the wind. I had little chance of catching them, and the more I rode the more tired I got. Jumped on a few groups, but rode solo until the dam, where I found Larry and Steve helping Jerry change a flat. We headed out together, but my legs continued to tighten up, so I fell back and continued in solo. The slog up Shiloh into the wind was a bear, and finally made it back just after Noon. Some chocolate milk and snacks later, I rode over to Bill's to enjoy the hospitality there (and the beer, quite good), then about 1:30 left and headed further south into the wind (no fun) then east and north back to the house. Added some more bonus miles and got home just after 3PM with 100 miles in the bag. Cleaned up quick so we could head off to church, boy was I tired though. Thanks Marty, Larry, Darrin, and others for the help up front the first 34, wish I could have finished with you, but I doubt the way I was feeling I could have kept up the entire way back. | ||||||||

| Way too many peeps in the pack today. Tough getting everyone through lights, etc. Once we thinned out after Greg took his 40ers short, things smoothed out. Thanks to Team Fiat for all their work up front into the wind and running the gate. Great route by Jimmy to get us away from the WildRide. Had some great stretches out in Sunnyvale and on the run home. | ||||||||

2013-05-18 | DB2 - Lucas + more | 106.87 | 16.40 | 0
| Thanks to Chris (The Machine) Minisquero for stepping up to lead a ride today – his first. He did a great job and only took us off course once (which was a worth a good laugh!), and didn’t blow up his own ride. He stayed on point for almost the entire ride, with only a short stint off the front on Cloverhaven. Seven riders (GQ of 14%) made the trip to Lucas, then down through Richardson using parts of routes from several other regular rides. Average at the rest stop was slightly up, but we had a tail wind for some of that stretch. The journey south was another story as we battled the wind. Back at SC&C I needed 46 more miles to get the 100, but found no takers for company. I headed west on SC to Headquarters where I came upon Dave, a guy out on a solo 20 mile ride. He’s been riding about two months and is looking for a regular dependable group with which to ride (he was riding solo because his ride buddies had bailed, get the idea?). I gave my best PBA sales pitch as I accompanied him to his home in Frisco off Rolater. Dave says he will check out the PBA website and we may see him in the fold soon. From Rolater, I made another loop around the Lucas water tower. I managed to keep my average up, even in the open spaces of Forest Grove. On the return trip, heading south once again, I took a beating by the wind. By 2pm, heading south on Alma was a pill (to put it lightly) as the wind destroyed my average as the wind increased to 14/23mph. Even so, I was glad to be part of Chris’ inaugural ride – thanks again Mr. Machine. | ||||||||

| They should change the name of this to Wind Ride. Came upon a horrific crash scene on the fast run north from Nevada. T&Ps for that guy. Never unclipped the entire ride, thanks to the men in blue and a bit of excellent timing. Missed Pecot, who pulled me home on Shiloh the last two years... | ||||||||

2013-05-18 | Fast Forty Plus Commute | 49.73 | 18.90 | 1,132
| About 40 riders today with a mixture of Lite, DB1,Fast Forty and a few from the Fiat team. Pace of the ride about the same as an upper end DB1 Ride but definitely not as smooth with many surges, riders passing on the right, up the middle of the lines, etc. Fast Forty group split off at about 20 miles with about 14 riders and we enjoyed some nice rotating pace lines along the way back to the lot. | ||||||||

| Thanks to my buddies Maggie, Andrew, Bill, and Rick who shielded me from the mighty wind, pushed and pulled me all the way home, and Woo-Hoo'd for me when I had no "woo" left to "hoo". I love you guys! MUAH! 40 MILES...and YES, I have witnesses. :) | ||||||||

| Very Inspriational Ride!!! Started with Brad's group an about 7 others. At the 34 mile rest stop, we have about 50-60. We were popular. Maybe it was our jerseys as it seemed that only a few were pulling including great pulls by Larry, Brad and Darrin. Somehjow we managed to lose Brad when he dropped a computer and Larry when he dropped his bottle. | ||||||||

2013-05-18 | Fast 40 to Rowlett + commute | 41.71 | 19.20 | 1,004
| First time on the Fast Forty ride and it was strange getting back to the start at 10am. Finally over 800 miles for the year. Went out with OAS Lite which had probably close to 60 riders and participated in the paceline until we were approaching the 16-mile mark as I didn't know when Fast Forty would peel off. Turned around at 20-mile point. Wattage was typical of OAS Lite rides from last year. Pretty warm today as it was 80F before we knew it. Nice to ride at least partway with some of the crew from my rides last year. Thanks to Greg for leading! Ran 6 miles afterwards to start getting used to running in the mid-day heat. Average Power: 180W | Normalized Power: 224W (about 10% harder than typical DB1 ride) | ||||||||

2013-05-17 | Pop-B + Commute - National Ride Your Bike to Work Week (Thurs Edition) | 50.15 | 0.00 | 0
| It is National Ride Your Bike to Work Week (still). The rain kept me off the morning commute, so at lunch, I drove home and rode the bike back to work. Horrible south winds made this trip work. The Pop after work was fantastic and crazy fast - even into the wind. This was my first Thursday Pop and it was as great as the Tues ride, even if it did seem to have fewer people and even fewer familiar faces. This could be habbit forming. | ||||||||

| well, FnA lived up to his name pulling us for most of the ride. Strong efforts from the usual suspects also, Yimmy, Smernoff, Pecot de Gallo and many others.... I even saw Bran Griffin up front for a short while. How humid was it? So humid that even Scott Alexander was having issues with his hair. Someone needs to teach Brian Williams the concept of the echelon.... if the wind is out of the south which it usually is, then on Renner, go to the left if you get out front so that old fat men like me, don't get guttered. | ||||||||

2013-05-16 | Mesquite - long loop | 36.56 | 18.20 | 1,055
| This time we had cooler temps and lighter south wind. I went out with the group again but held back so the fast group would be well out ahead of me. I left the slow group after about 5 miles and figured I wouldn't see the fast group again. So I did the whole loop, but I could see the fast group ahead about a quarter miles and I seemed to be whittling the gap down. I hit Lawson, and I obviously had narrowed the gap. I wasn't worried about catching though, the Lawson hills were ahead - no way I would see them after that. Well, I was wrong. After 4 substantial climbs, I nearly caught the group at a light and was hoping I wouldn't. I did make the light and with a slight downhill, they made a good effort at pulling away, but, by the time I had gone down to I-20, there was one rider who had fallen off, and I was in danger of catching him. Still I thought it unlikely. I made the right turn at the middle of the loop and then another right to enjoy tailwind back to the north. Darn it if I didn't catch that one rider and we were on an uphill and he was too slow. After waiting on traffic I went around him and pulled away until the next light. Then we rode together for awhile but I pulled away again on another hill. This time he finally realized that it might be possible to draft me. So he made a final push and got on my wheel. I was not planning to slow down but just the same I was rooting for him to bridge up to his buddies who were not very far ahead. He did try to bridge up and left me behind but his effort fell short. I was riding a steady pace and as we made the turn to head north again, I passed him on another uphill. Then finally we reach the big dip before the funeral home and I had caught the main group of the fast riders. I decided on a different turn that would give me an extra mile and the fast group would be ahead again. This gave me some breathing room for the next 5 miles, but by the time I hit Belt Line, I caught not only the fast riders who had gone long, but the slower group who had gone short. I went ahead on around them and made my way back, the last couple of miles to the car. I might have ridden with them, but they were going about 12 mph - I couldn't tolerate that pace. | ||||||||

2013-05-14 | Mesquite/Sunnyvale long loop | 35.32 | 17.10 | 1,086
| No ride to REI this week although I could have done it solo. But I hadn't gotten around to creating the route on RWGPS so I opted for Mesquite, from Poteet High School. I hadn't done the long ride in a couple years. The group always used to but now no one but the fast group does that. I rode out with the fast group and stayed with them about 10 miles but I knew I would have a hard time staying with them once we hit the hills on Lawson, especially in the very strong south wind. So I stopped at the rock quarry for my nature break and the group went on. Now on my own and happy about it, I went ahead and did the long loop, all the way down Lawson to just before the I-20 service road. I did the turn and reached the northbound route after a mile or so and was enjoying taking advantage of the very strong tailwind at this point. After flying through on green at Cartwright, the next light got me, as it usually does. I pulled up for the red light and across the way was Paul Brown and Tony on recumbent and Russell on road bike. I crossed the road and joined their ride. They were going a lot slower than I had been and they stopped at a store, something I felt was unnecessary. Oh well, we got on the road again and finished after another 10 miles. Enjoyed this ride but next time I will do it solo, my way. | ||||||||

2013-05-11 | Elm Mott Trot 205k | 128.48 | 16.60 | 3,169
| I'm used to doing 200k rides but they are never easy, no matter how flat, at least not in Texas. I've done this one numerous times. 128 miles, 3000 ft of climbing, out and back, through parts of 4 counties. What makes it hard? Wind is number one. We had tailwind the first half, going south. I had the presence of mind to hit the lap button at the turnaround in Elm Mott - 18.4 avg, 1st half. 2nd half is more than half the climbing and headwind northbound back to Venus - 15.0 avg. I was actually surprised it was that high. Of the 4 counties, Johnson, Ellis, Hill, and the one Waco is the county seal of, but I can't remember the name, we spend half the ride in Ellis County. Which has the roughest, chunkiest chip seal? Yes - Ellis County. Chip Seal like that really slows you down. After wind, road surface is often the next worst thing about a ride. The one redeeming factor on this ride is the BBQ brisket sandwiches we had in Malone - those sandwiches are to die for. Nearly 10 hours to do a 200k - either I'm getting slow in my old age or the conditions are tough. The answer lies somewhere in the middle of that, I think. | ||||||||

| Smart and strong ride for me. I did sit in and I was very thankful that Brent and Joel were here to pull into that ferocious wind out of the south. First ride this year that I stayed with the pack up Crash Hill and even past the green light at Los Rios. Very happy. Beers after the ride with celebrity cyclist, Steve "the guinea" Marino, who came down from Jersey to hang with his peeps. | ||||||||

2013-05-15 | Pop-B Goes the Commute - National Ride Your Bike to Work Week | 50.50 | 0.00 | 0
| It is National Ride Your Bike to Work Week after all. It's been a week since I have ridden but it was great to get another commute to work + Pop ride to wrap up my day. Winds were a bit stout, but still it was a nice brisk ride – just what I needed after having sat on my rump for a week. | ||||||||

2013-05-14 | Craig's ranch Crit - 3rd Place | 12.00 | 23.50 | 0
| Big Brandon did an awesome job of pulling the train tonight. I got upfront for 3-4 laps, which is never a good idea for me in a Crit. I was in 1st Place with 200 meters to go, but couldn't hold off 2 riders who sat on my wheel for 3 laps (which they are suppose to do). Everyone knows my Mother can beat me in a Sprint. Still, first time on Podium, the 3 of us got a good laugh at my attempts to get them to help me upfront :) | ||||||||

| Good group of about 25 cyclists today as we headed NW on a variety of roads to a big metropolis called Valdasta! Never been there and this route included some new roads including going by MT. Trash near Melissa that really smelled good! :( We had some nice rollers and enjoyed a little wind at our back coming back south but did had a little wind out of the west as we headed back home. Got back with a 18.9 Rolling average and a heart rate average of only 111! Still have some of that additional training effect from running more over the last few months. Route map included. | ||||||||

2013-05-11 | Saturday OAS Lite | EPIC RIDE | 68.91 | 20.20 | 1,799
| What a day. Beautiful cloudless skies, a nice little 15 to 20 mph north wind and a spunky over sized group headed out with Greg "the pansy" Thurmond and his FAST FORTY guys to Celina and parts beyond. CREST racing team with many of our old friends joined us at 380 and passed us just around 1461. But they don't paceline.... our well oiled machine caught them and they pulled us to 134 where we pulled over to let Jimmy with the giant bladder relieve himself. On the 134 rollers the party was lit up.... wow! It's a shame that I fell OTB. Luckily they're my boys and they waited in Weston where we ran into..... yep, you guessed it CREST with Ron Lillis, Bill Anderson, Matt Brady and others. On 543 heading south with the wind at our backs CREST passed us but not for long. Damon, Button, the Project, the Russian, the quarter Jew took off the front and we were all climaxing as we were cruising south for many miles at 35 to 40 mph. Unfortunately, Ron and 3 others came with us as the rest of the CREST team turned at 125. Construction at 75 changed the route a bit but we were all slap happy and basking in the glow of good bicycle sex at the rest stop which just happened to be at the 48 miles mark. Unfortunate events with 4 PBA members crashing clouded the afternoon. We wish all of our fallen brethren a speedy recovery. One more very important note.... yes, we had a chick with us the whole way. Shelby, thanks for validating our little group. | ||||||||

2013-05-11 | Saturday DB Lite | DBL to McKinney + commute | 57.27 | 0.00 | 1,477
| Okay, today we were back to DBL speeds. Sixteen of us headed north on a mostly sunny and warming day into fierce winds…okay, not even a little fierce, but we actually had a little headwind outbound this week. Our route included a few hills here and there, and that seemed to take it out of some folks early on. As a result, after a while there were almost always one or two folks OTB, but we regrouped regularly. After the break (which should have been at the QT but those in front went to the Race Trac out of habit) the group off the front had a couple of extra adventures but always managed to catch up to the rest of us eventually. After Rollins we finally split rather conclusively into smaller groups. I stayed with the trailing group until after Legacy, then I took advantage of the tailwind and punched the gas for a sprint back to the lot (good for a PR on Strava and, at least among Strava users, a top 10 finish (in the real world probably a top 200, but I'll take it). I finished the ride with a 16.7 average, right in the middle of our advertised range. Good ride! | ||||||||
