2013-06-16 | Jailhouse 216k | 134.99 | 15.20 | 3,500
| Tough ride - the heat didn't make me sick but it was still tiring. This is one of my least favorite rides and it lived up to that billing this time, too. Sharon asked me to ride with her so I did but I never looked forward to it. I last did this in December. That is a much better time of year to do this one but still not much fun even when it is cool. But, at least we had tail wind on the way back, this time. Usually the prevailing wind makes it cross wind both ways. The ride starts in Italy and heads generally southwest. There is one stop before the turn back point and that is mainly because there are no towns or stores to stop at, except the truck stop near Abbott. It's 32 miles from Italy to Abbott. Then it is 35 miles from Abbott to Valley Mills, the next town. It's an out and back so the best of all worlds is a southwest wind (which we had) as that yields a tailwind on the return - doesn't happen that way very often. | ||||||||

2013-06-13 | Sam Houston Loop | 73.55 | 15.90 | 1,314
| Thursday I did the long loop - 73 miles total including round trip from the Red River Inn. I started about half an hour later than everyone else because I arrived so late the previous night. but eventually caught up to a few recumbents at about mile 15, just after riding through Detroit. This group included a couple riders I already know - John Sadowski and Tony Ward. I talked to Tony for awhile until that group turned toward the medium length ride. I continued on north on FM 410 which loops up near the Red River through beautiful green fields, stands of Loblolly pines and hardwood forests. During this stretch I saw a turtle, a bobcat, and deer. There was also a very pleasant rest stop at a house and gift of a souvenir t-shirt, highlighting the name of a nearby town - Kanawha - but only if the rider was doing the long loop - that was a nice surprise. When I eventually emerged on SH 37 to head south back to Clarksville, there was another rest stop. As I pulled in there, another recumbent came up from the south - it was Steve. I rode with Steve quite awhile - passed the time nicely riding the shoulder of an otherwise boring section of highway. Eventually Steve pulled in at a convenience store and I went on back to Clarksville. Had a 15.9 avg which included some fast riding and some significant stretches at a slower pace talking to Tony Ward and Steve. Other than riding at length with those two, I did the ride solo. These are very flat rides. Thursday's total climbing was 1330 ft. But climbing isn't always the story. In Red River County, chip seal is the story, and most of it was pretty rough! That evening I had dinner at the Mexican restaurant - that really hit the spot as the only other meal I had was breakfast. When I'd finished the ride, I wasn't all that hungry as I'd been eating bananas at the two rest stops I saw. After my finish, back at the motel, I had an apple as well. So a very light lunch at the end of the ride insured a good appetite for dinner. | ||||||||

2013-06-14 | DeKalb Loop | 76.94 | 15.70 | 1,465
| Friday's ride was another long loop. I got started from the motel in time to pass the high school about 6:35 AM and that put me out there early enough to see several riders just starting out. The first rest stop was about 10 miles east of Clarksville at a very old house, built in the 1860's, in the town of English. I didn't need anything there but I went into the house to admire the fantastic, huge, crystal chandelier hanging in the living room. The chandelier came from Belgium in the 1880's and was stunning. I was dripping too much to explore more of the house (didn't want to leave puddles) and I got on my way after a short stop. Had another wildlife sighting shortly after leaving - a big, thick, long black snake curled up in the middle of the road. It was alert, having had numerous bikes pass it closely. Have no idea what kind of snake it was but I didn't mess with it! About 20 minutes after I left there, I spotted Steve, the recumbent rider I had ridden with the previous day, up ahead just as he was set upon by a pack of about 10 dogs that came flying across a lawn and through a useless fence. He managed to fend those dogs off but only after several anxious moments. I came through the midst of the dogs 5 seconds later but they seemed to have lost their enthusiasm for the chase and only a couple gave a halfhearted effort. I chatted with Steve for a short while but we were coming to a fairly intimidating looking hill and he told me he would go slow up that. So I went ahead from there and didn't see another soul until about 5 miles before the rest stop at Boxelder. After several miles of eastward travel from English, the pavement petered out straight ahead but there was more pavement to the right. Chipseal wasn't bad on this stretch, but it was still rougher riding. This road had an uneven surface and was more like riding a jackhammer than a bike! After about 10 miles I came to the town of DeKalb. Ricky Nelson's plane crashed near DeKalb on December 31st, 1985, and the tail section of that plane is in the DeKalb museum. But I didn't see just where the museum, was so I went on through town and continued on toward Boxelder. Boxelder was about mile 50 or so. To that point, I had an 18 avg, but I wasn't necessarily interested in going fast if there was a good reason not to. After all, I'd finish by around noon, anyway, no matter what I did and that is pretty early in the day. About 5 miles after I left Boxelder, I came across Ken Ward on his recumbent. I didn't know who he was ahead of time, but he was on a recumbent and that was reason enough to slow down. I rode with Ken quite awhile talking about various things until we caught up with Ken (James?) - I don't think I heard his last name mentioned but he is one of the two Ken's listed on the rider list. He rides a Gold Rush with a custom sun shade stretched across the top and making a very effective sun shade. I rode a few miles with Ken, chatting about more various things until we got to the next rest stop which was only a couple miles out of Clarksville. I pulled in anyway because "what the heck? when we finish we'd have hours to kill before dinner time!" That stop was very worthwhile as the owner of the house had some berry cobbler and vanilla ice cream to feed us - that really hit the spot. He had an orchard of pecan trees on his front lawn giving some glorious shade, as it was beginning to warm up by then. I dilly dallied there quite awhile as there was no big rush to finish the ride. I continued on with Ken Ward once I left and we rode into town. Eventually we had to single up and I was in front so I went ahead and picked up the pace and went back to the motel. I finished with a 15.7 avg and total climbing for the ride was 1488 ft. I had my shower, another apple, and a can of chicken and a Gatorade left over on the bike. Later I went to the school to pick up a water bottle I'd left at Boxelder, and then on to Dairy Queen for a large coffee flavored shake. About 6PM I headed back into town for dinner at the Italian Bistro and then visited happy hour up stairs where a number of riders were congregated, enjoying some beer or wine. There, I met up with two of the faster tandem couples - Sue and Mike Baker and Brenda and Carlos Nieves. Sue Baker remembered me from my tandem days training for a transcontinental bike ride with Pac Tour, with Judith Jolly as my stoker, which we did in 1999. Sue has a heck of a good memory - I have to say I did not remember her although she did look vaguely familiar. She invited me to join them and the other tandem the next day (Saturday) and they would be going for a few extra miles. I thought, why not? If I got dropped, I'd just follow the Garmin RWGPS programming. | ||||||||

2013-06-15 | Bogata / Detroit Loop + portion of Bagwell / Dimple Loop | 69.01 | 18.60 | 1,196
| So, Saturday morning came and I was checking out of the motel to drive home later in the day. I loaded up and drove over to the high school where I was second in line for breakfast, ate some oatmeal and had a little sausage and coffee. Then it was back out to the car to get the recumbent ready to ride. Most, if not all of the riders left about 6:15. The tandems and one single bike were ready to roll at 6:30 and they immediately set off at a blistering pace. I can hang at 25 mph for awhile but didn't think I'd want to do it for 70 miles! Fortunately, The Bakers slowed down on the rollers and the Nieves tandem waited on them. After awhile the average pace seemed to settle at about 20 to 21 and we quickly caught the group of recumbents - I had time for a wave and that was about it. Then we caught a group of road bikes and went on by them, although a couple hopped on with the tandems. We went along pretty steadily until we hit a section with some headwind. The pace dropped off some, through that stretch and we passed a rest stop I would have stopped at except I was committed to staying with the tandems. About 12 miles south of Detroit, the Bakers were having trouble hanging with the other tandem and a gap opened up. I'd been having trouble with hot foot and actually stopped a couple times to take care of that. Then managed to catch the tandems by setting the cruise control on 23 - that got the job done. Anyway, I drifted off ahead of the Bakers and reached Detroit between the Nieves tandem and the Baker tandem - there were a few minutes either side of me for arrival times. From Detroit, we eventually left the Saturday long course to add part of the Thursday short course and we ended up with 69 miles. I had an 18.7 avg at the end and 1200 ft of climbing. Thus ended 3 very satisfying and enjoyable days of riding. I might do this one again but hard to know what I will take time for a year from now. But, other than some major chip seal and a few stretches on Friday on roads that felt like I was riding a jackhammer, due to uneven road surface, this isn't bad riding and the scenery was nice too, as was the company, whenever I managed to hook up with someone. But if I do it again, I'll be staying at the high school! | ||||||||

2013-06-16 | BnB - Sachse + commute | 64.51 | 17.50 | 1,355
| Kraig led the group of 15 out to Sachse, with only one short mechanical on the torn up piece of Vinson Road. I didn't care for that nasty bit of roadway and its ground-down pavement and lose gravel. Kraig did lead us on a slight detour around the road construction (destruction, as I heard someone say) on the Pleasant Valley Road hill, and I much preferred the tour of the neighborhood rather than the steep climb at that point. We had an average of 18.3 to the rest stop, which seemed amazing since I did not feel like were on an 18 pace. When the group reached Renner, Kraig released the reins on the seven of us that were traveling faster to head to the barn. The trip back to L&I was uneventful, with an 18.4 pace. I’m still amazed we were on that pace since it did not fell like it from my seat; I must be getting more comfortable riding one-handed. Big thanks to all the horses that pulled today – I was not one of them, but I enjoyed their draft. It was nice to see the many familiar faces and ride with the BnB group again. | ||||||||

2013-06-16 | Bikes & Bagels | 49.00 | 18.30 | 0
| Haven't made this ride in a while, but I didn't ride Saturday to help prep for a birthday party, so today was my day to ride. ~15 headed out led by Kraig and Darrin on the regular Sachse route. Good to ride with a few people I haven't had the chance to see lately. Weather was nice to start, but warmed up particularly after the stop. Somehow I ended up at the front as we left 7-11 along with Brian. We pulled most of the way back, I yielded the front to David Morgan at Renner, and a group of 7 went back a bit faster while Kraig and the rest came in just a bit behind. Got back on the front with David after a bit, and stayed there until the last hill on Independence and the legs tightened up. Good ride, and Happy Father's Day to all the dads. | ||||||||

2013-06-15 | Saturday DB Rides | DBL - White Rock Lake + commute | 63.70 | 16.30 | 1,302
| Still riding with the broken wrist, I opted for a more relaxed ride this week with Tim and his DBL crew. It was nice to ride with many familiar faces and to make some new friends. The ride was eventful (not by me) for all of the wrong reasons: four mechanicals and one rider down. Rumor has it that the rider down forgot to unclip, but was uninjured (except his pride). I had a good ride as Tim’s route stayed mostly on smooth roads; for this, I thank him, and my wrist thanks him. Like last week, the first 40 miles were easy but the wrist started feeling uncomfortable as I approached 50 miles. I had absolutely no motivation to tack on more than commute miles this week. Even though I ‘almost’ rode as many miles as last Saturday (Collin Classic), I feel much better and had no tears of pain this week – a good thing. Thanks to those that did the work up front as I sat in, and thanks to Tim for leading another fun ride. | ||||||||

2013-06-15 | Saturday OAS Lite | oas lite + commute | 65.69 | 0.00 | 0

2013-06-15 | Saturday OAS Lite | Prosper to New Hope and home | 59.71 | 20.80 | 0
| Large group of 50 joined us this morning, and a special appearance by Sir Charles. Joel picked out a great route, and Team Fiat did great work up front for the entire ride. Given the size of the group and strength of some riders, I opted not have pace line going, which was a nice change of pace (no pun intended). Lots of good rollers, limited lights and some good surges. One mis-hap in a corner with some water, but everyone got up and rode home safely in one piece. Given the size of this group, couldn't ask for a better morning. Thanks again to Joel and Fiat. | ||||||||

2013-06-15 | Saturday DB Rides | PBA-DB1 around dfw airport | 65.44 | 18.90 | 1,594
| Graduation day to DB1! Brian led a steady, disciplined, fun ride to and around DFW. I thought spinning at the lake for the last two months had slowed me down, but the opposite was true. I stayed behind the pace lines, watching and learning ( and enjoying the drafting) for the first 50 miles hoping just to hang on. The first of three mechanicals I welcomed as that was the only time in the ride I needed a break. I realized I still had a lot left at the end , so joined the pace line for the last 10 ish miles. First time I used homemade Gu. Felt my energy level much more steady than the ups and downs of the past. Thanks for the warm welcome...everyone was so nice! M, thanks for being my back up in case it didn't go so well. | ||||||||
|
2013-06-15 | Saturday DB Rides | DB1 to DFW | 65.61 | 19.10 | 1,385
| The entire group was very pleased to welcome Mary on today's ride to and around DFW, even though Marty came along with her. She rode strong and, unlike the rest of the group, actually got stronger toward the end. Accordingly, Mary is this week's unanimous choice for DB1 Rider of the Week! We did have 3 mechanicals, but that's irrelevant in the grand scheme of what's really important...which is the safety of the group. I was pleased we had no issues, an evenly matched group, an excellent group size, and a lot of participation in the pace making from start to finish. Thanks to Steve and Cyrus for all their support! Happy Father's Day to all PBA Dads! | ||||||||

2013-06-15 | 42.00 | 0.00 | 0
| Well first of all there will be many a female member who cries herself to sleep tonight as Rosario was a no show. Club management really needs to work on that as it's not fair to heighten expectations like that only to dash them at the last moment. Those that did make it however were treated to more moderate conditions than expected. We were extremely lucky this morning as we did have a mishap however the young lady involved seemed to be ok although I bet she will be sore later today. Anyway save for the lack of eye candy and the wreck it was a fine ride which I thoroughly enjoyed and as always I thank ride management for their professional leadership and dedication. | ||||||||

2013-06-11 | Tues/Thur Popsicle Ride (Mar-Oct only) | Pop B | 41.87 | 20.10 | 1,099
| So, we all know John Evans has come a long way, recently completing his 24-hour TT and moving onto other insane endurance trials, but anyone who knows me knows I could care less about strength and endurance. It is skill and bike handling, two things that elude most of our aero-bar tri friends, that make an amazing rider. The point: At the front of Pop B for almost the entire ride, on aero-bars, in headwind and crosswind, with a dead solid wheel and true line was Mr. John Evans. Very very impressive. If you see him up-front pulling the entire ride, don't forget to thank him for the pulls. Thank you, John. | ||||||||

2013-06-08 | 2013 Collin Classic | 65.40 | 16.10 | 0
| Rode the CC for the 3rd time, but first as a Ride Guide. Met up with Derek, Richard, and several others at the start, and rode out at the back of the 55/64 mile group. Went out pretty slow to see if anyone had issues as those behind passed. Derek and I stayed together the first 30+ miles and all the major issues were already been handled when we get there - the accident prior to the bridge at mile 7, and the major accident Ron mentioned at 20+. Checked on a few riders that pulled off but didn't need help, and very limited verbal guidance to a few riders made for a slow ride it seemed. Derek split off and I went on the 64 route, met up with Brian Powell and Leon Campisi for a while. Helped a recent PBA member Brooks at around mile 35 - he had flatted earlier and was out of tubes and CO2. Looks like debris was still in the tire, and had several cuts in them. Debris removed and 2 tire boots to support the weak spots and we were off. He got mechanical help at the next rest stop, and rode like someone I'll be seeing on DB2 at some point. Stopped at the PBA rest stop for a popsicle and refreshments, and helped secure a loose water bottle for another rider. Headed back in solo, and met up with Mike Emmons at the next stop, and we rode in together from there. Got a little tired from the mostly solo riding and not having done a long ride since Wildflower, but was a good ride. Just before the final turn, Mike and I stopped for a rider experiencing cramps - at least that's what we thought as he spoke mostly Spanish. I'm sure he didn't realize how close to the finish he was, but gave him a gel and made sure he was okay, then finished off the ride. Wind had picked up and temps warmed by that time. Burgers from the Londoner hit the spot after the ride. | ||||||||

| Nice leisurely ride - a lot of new roads for me - good scenery, lots of flowers still blooming, and mostly good roads, and did this on the road bike as it was a relatively short ride. Enjoyed the company of Brenda, Rani, and Joseph (Mark turned back at the quarter way point - that's all he had time for.) Ride started at Joe Poole Lake, headed for Midlothian, Maypearl, Italy, Avalon, Waxahachie, and back to Midlothian and Joe Poole Lake. Ride was mostly moderate rolling hills, lots of trees, shaded roads, and one rogue hill at 13%. None of the other rollers exceeded 7%. Had a SE breeze and it was a pretty warm day, but the breeze was cool, so it was all good. | ||||||||
